This lavish remake of the 1930 film version of the Broadway musical of the same name stars congenial Peter Lawford as Tait College football hero Tommy Marlowe, who's having trouble making his grades, and adorably nitwitty June Allyson as Connie Lane, the student librarian who tutors him. The campus sexpot (Patricia Marshall) has her sights set on Tommy, but he succumbs to the goodness of Connie, and all winds up well, including the inevitable big game.

New songs--"Pass That Peace Pipe" and "The French Lesson"--and sensational choreography contributed to making this an impressive debut for director Charles Walters and a big hit for MGM in 1947. There is also superb supporting work by Mel Torme and Joan McCracken, who had made a name for herself on the stage in Bloomer Girl and Billion Dollar Baby. The rest of the score--"The Varsity Drag," "The Best Things in Life Are Free," et al.--is from the 1927 DeSylva, Brown, and Henderson Broadway show. leave a comment
