When Luckinbill has to go into the hospital for minor surgery, wife Cannon discovers her husband's little black book full of the names of her friends. Cannon decides to get even and engage in some extramarital affairs of her own. While she is trading partners, Luckinbill's mole-removal surgery becomes a comedy of errors that result in his death. This film, directed by the legendary Otto Preminger, aimed at being contemporary but turned out contemptible. It does, however, provide a look at a tough-skinned New York lifestyle that Big Apple resident Preminger well understood. The main screenwriting credit went to Esther Dale, the pseudonym used by Elaine May (and borrowed from the capable character actress), who disdained screenwriting credits for films she hadn't directed. Novelist-screenwriter Joan Didion is also said to have contributed to the screenplay, but her work was uncredited. leave a comment
