This congenial piffle is a perfect example of the kind entertainment Hollywood studios once ground for their in-house stars; the central problem is that these capable contemporary actors lack a certain glittering je ne sais quoi. Cocky Manhattan stockbroker Ryan Turner (Charlie Sheen) gets his comeuppance when publishing magnate Donald Simpson (Barry Newman) feeds him incorrect insider information. Simpson, sho's nobody's fool, is repaying Turner for having slept with his wife. Now unemployed, Turner sinks into depression and his yuppie girlfriend, Cindy Styne (Denise Richards), on the prowl for greener pastures, dumps both her downwardly mobile beau and the advice column she'd been writing for "The Chelsea Journal." In desperate need of a paycheck, Turner dupes Cindy's uptight editor, Paige Henson (Angie Harmon), and starts writing the Q&A column himself, with Cindy's byline still attached. Surprise! Turner's male perspective touches a responsive chord and his lovelorn guidance attracts a wider readership than Cindy ever garnered. Turner meanwhile starts wooing Paige, thopugh he can't bring himself to come clean about his nom de plume. The bubble bursts when Cindy returns, her dream life with another man in ruins. Turner must somehow salvage the situation without giving Cindy too much ammunition she could — and no doubt would — use against him. Even though her own helpful romantic hints failed Cindy dismally, she takes advantage of the Turner-penned column's success. Then Simpson decides to poach Cindy for his newspaper, not realizing that she isn't the wildly popular column's author. As the game of musical chairs plays out, can Turner keep his new career, retaliate against Simpson and win over Paige, all the while keeping his masculine pride intact? Even though lonelyhearts/mistaken-identity tales of this kind have been told to death, this good-natured film gets a boost from the well-crafted screenplay and bouncy direction. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
