Gaynor is terrific as a showgirl who finds fame during the Civil War, touring from town to town. Robertson is a Confederate spy who is in love with her and follows her trail. Overall, it's enjoyable entertainment. Day is fun to watch as Gaynor's timid admirer/inspirer, and the direction is good, with musical numbers particularly well handled. Produced by comedian-toastmaster Jessel. Songs: "Dixie" (Daniel Decatur Emmett, sung by Mitzie Gaynor), "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny," "Oh, Dem Golden Slippers" (James A. Bland), "California Moon" (Jessel, Sam Lerner, Joe Cooper), "Sunday Morning" (Eliot Daniel, Ken Darby), "Kiss Me Quick and Go My Honey" (Daniel), Best Song Oscar nominee "Never" (Daniel, Lionel Newman), "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" (Patrick S. Gilmore), "Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms" (Thomas Moore, Matthew Locke), and "La Donna E Mobile" (from "Rigoletto" by Giuseppe Verdi). leave a comment
