In San Francisco's Chinatown, the daughter of a stern shopkeeper disobeys her parents and goes to the Chinese opera. With the help of her father's salesman, Nom, she sneaks into a club and meets the opera's star. They fall in love and marry, much to the wrath of Quan. He stops speaking to her and fires the salesman. The singer has to return to China while the girl has a baby, but she dies in childbirth. The baby grows up to look like her mother (Man in a dual role) and eventually reconciles with her grandfather. The first all-Chinese language picture shot in Chinatown, its director was also a noted female film director in her native country. (In Chinese.) leave a comment
