Director Ritchie has had a hit-and-miss career, and this is definitely a miss--a muddle of would-be comedy and Eastern mysticism, with a heavy dose of Indiana-Jones-type adventure. It begins promisingly enough with the bold kidnaping of a Tibetan holy youth, the Golden Child (Reate), from a temple high in Shangri-La land. The evildoers are led by Dance, who (as ambassador of the devil) must not allow this child to bring peace to the earth. Lewis, who works for the Tibetans, contracts with Murphy, a free-lance child finder working in Los Angeles, to find this Golden Child. THE GOLDEN CHILD cost more than $24 million and looks it. A patina of heavy money is everywhere but in the script, which surely must rank as one of the silliest attempts to blend action and laughter ever written. The jokes are mostly flat, the action is frenetic, the motivations are murky, and some scenes defy understanding. All the standard adventure gimmicks seen in movies since well before GUNGA DIN and a general aura of cliche make this one strictly missable. The effects will scare little children and cause adult viewers to laugh. leave a comment
