Gold: Review

Kayssler is a modern day alchemist, who, along with his assistant, Albers, creates an atomic reactor capable of changing lead to gold. They are made a handsome offer by Bohnen for their discovery but decide gold-making is beneath their talents and the machine is destroyed. The photography gives a nice atmospheric look to GOLD and the acting is quite strong. Helm is especially good as the assistant who is also the lover. A French version, entitled L'OR, was shot simultaneously by Serge de Poligny, with some of the actors taking different roles. Helm, however, played the same character in both versions. After WW II, a nervous U.S. government had the film screened by nuclear experts, fearful that GOLD was proof that the Germans had the know-how to build an atomic reactor. leave a comment
