Thirty years after the California gold rush, mining is largely run by companies. Brent is an engineer sent to supervise an operation in Perris, California. After saving Lance from a barroom brawl, he falls for Lance's sister, de Havilland. But to no avail; she's a farmer's daughter and farmers hate the miners. A war breaks out between the two forces and Lance is killed. Before he dies he is able to blow up a dam that sets off a landslide. The plot was used many times in such diverse westerns as OKLAHOMA and HEAVEN'S GATE, but here the thinness of the plot is overcome by strong production values. The Technicolor photography is lush and beautifully captures the on-location scenery. Based on a true story. leave a comment
