GOLD DIGGERS: THE SECRET OF BEAR MOUNTAIN

We'd like to be able to report that GOLD DIGGERS is a much-needed antidote to all those boys' coming-of-age stories, but the female equivalent of STAND BY ME has yet to be filmed. Despite the very real charms of young leads Christina Ricci and Anna Chlumsky, this perfunctory kiddie adventure fails to persuade. Ricci is a sophisticated city girl rudely relocated to the Pacific Northwest; Chlumsky is a local tomboy whose alcoholic mother (Diana Scarwid) has made her a pariah. Together they set off in search of a legendary cache of gold hidden in Bear Mountain, learning about courage, loyalty and friendship along the way. It's pure formula throughout, and that title has got to go: Busby Berkeley this ain't. leave a comment
