Gold Diggers In Paris

1938, Movie, NR, 100 mins

Last and weakest of the GOLD DIGGER films, this one set in Paris was an attempt both to breathe some life into the series and to make a bonafide movie star out of Vallee. The results are passable. This time around the Gold Diggers visit France and there's some confusion between a club named "Ballet" and the American Ballet. That's really just an excuse for some good old-fashioned Busby Berkeley production numbers. Though the studio budgeted this film well below the others, Berkeley did his usual fine job. The direction is fine, considering the thin plot Enright had to work with. Songs: "The Latin Quarter," "I Wanna Go Back to Bali," "Put That Down in Writing," "A Stranger in Paree" (Al Dubin, Harry Warren), "Day Dreaming All Night Long," "Waltz of the Flowers," "My Adventure" (Johnny Mercer, Warren). leave a comment
