This WW II melodrama is set during the occupation of France but is intercut in a time-shifting narrative with a modern story of reincarnation. Photographed as if pulled out of the glossy pages of the Sunday newspaper supplement, GOING AND COMING BACK tells the story of a Jewish family, headed by Piccoli and wife Fabian, who take refuge from the Nazis by escaping to a country home owned by aristocrats Trintignant and Girardot. Before long Gestapo thugs find them and send them to a concentration camp. Shifting ahead to 1985, Piccoli's daughter, Lange, believes her long-dead brother, Berchot, has been reincarnated as a famous pianist (also played by Berchot, a real-life musician in his screen debut), because of their mutual love of Sergi Rachmaninoff's "Concerto No. 2." None of this, however, amounts to anything of much interest or ingenuity, seeming more like a glorified soap opera. This Claude Lelouch film also includes a short clip from Henri-Georges Clouzot's 1943 picture LE CORBEAU, which was released in the US in 1948 as THE RAVEN.
