GOING APE! is a lot of monkey business involving Tony Danza, some orangutans, and $5 million. When his father dies, Foster (Danza) stands to gain a big inheritance, provided that he follow the dictate of his father's will and care for Dad's beloved orangutans for five years. If any of them should come down with as much as a sniffle, however, the money will go to the local zoo. Cynthia (Stacey Nelkin), Foster's girl, grows fond of the hairy beasts, while her money-mad mother (Jessica Walter) schemes to marry her child off. Jeremy Joe Kronsberg made his directorial debut with this number after beginning a successful career in the orangutan film business as the writer of Clint Eastwood's EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE and ANY WHICH WAY YOU CAN. The same apes were used in all three films under the guidance of Bobby Berosini. Unfortunately, GOING APE! is about as creative as its title. There's little humor and no room for the actors to show their stuff. leave a comment
