Two bored sailors on a South Seas island bide their time by sending romantic letters to various feminine pen pals, enclosing a picture of their chief officer with every letter. Eventually, the officer's fiancee finds out and thinks she's being two-timed. Meanwhile, one of the pen pals is a Soviet spy, all too eager to win the affection of an American officer. Although it employs a funny premise, the film is not nearly as daring as it could be. The Bernards are not up to their comic roles and resort to mugging and pratfalls. At the film's end, they have neatly cleared up the romantic troubles and captured some Soviet spies to boot. But at that point, the film has gone on long enough and the humor is spent. Some good editing helps the pace, but not by much. leave a comment
