Go West, Young Lady

A brave attempt, though not successful, to combine slapstick comedy, cowboy film aesthetics, and musical numbers into one package. It's the old story of a marshal (Ford) sent to clean up a small town terrorized by an outlaw. Singleton and Miller are the two ladies vying for (and fighting over) Ford's attentions. The real problem with GO WEST, YOUNG LADY is that it's never really sure what sort of film it wants to be. Consequently, it goes everywhere at once, and the results are not what was intended. Wills was a major country-and-western artist at the time and put together his biggest band ever for this film. Songs include "Ida Red" (Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys), "Doggie, Take Your Time," "Gentlemen Don't Prefer a Lady," "I Wish That I Could Be a Singing Cowboy," "Rise to Arms (The Pots and Pans Parade)," "Somewhere Along the Trail," "Go West, Young Lady," (Sammy Kahn, Saul Chaplin). leave a comment
