As a result of experiments with miracle growth formula Methadone 192, a relatively normal 10-year-old boy has been transformed into a 15-foot giant and is meaner than a rattlesnake. Neil Hamilton (Paul Coufos), a botanist at a university in New York City, tries to concoct an antidote. He injects a few lab rats to see what happens, and that night, animal-rights protesters breaking into the lab find gigantic rodents, which eat the protesters' leader. The cops are skeptical, and the university administration stonewalls. It's left to Hamilton (with some help) to hunt for the rats. Eventually, the massive rodents crawl up the drainage system into the school's new swimming pool where, during the grand opening, they begin to attack a team of synchronized swimmers performing in the water! Working from a script that borrows generously from JAWS, director Damian Lee has fashioned a predictable nature-gone-awry film that never rises above its B-movie trappings. Despite its many shortcomings, GNAW has some enjoyable moments, and one cannot help being amused by the film's campy elements. Unfortunately, these moments are few and far between, and the acting is serviceable at best. leave a comment
