This mercifully unsentimental but deeply moving Civil War drama tells the true — and hitherto uncelebrated — story of a Union regiment of black soldiers. In the process, the film provides what is undoubtedly the most authentic portrayal of a conflict that killed 700,000 Americans, more than 37,000 of them black. Denzel Washington won an Academy-Award for his portrayal of an embittered, bullying, but tough-as-steel runaway slave; Morgan Freeman costars as a gravedigger who is the regiment's anchor of strength and voice of reason.
