Vietnam veteran Moriarty and his buddy, Lower East Side kid Devane, visit Kennedy, Moriarty's father, on their return from the conflict in which the son--to his shame--has been forced to kill a Vietnamese woman. Moriarty invites psychopathic killer sergeant Ryan, to come and meet the jingoistic Kennedy, who delights in his memories of WW II. The intended confrontation therapy fails, at least at the outset: the father retains his misguided ideals despite his humiliation by the sadistic sergeant. Devane attempts to hunt down his cuckolding wife and, unsuccessful, returns to dad's farm with Swope--daughter of actress Dorothy McGuire in real life--a Canadian peace-worker hitchhiker, whom Ryan attempts to rape. Diverted from his violence by a gunshot wound at the hands of the dim-witted Devane, the convalescing Ryan evinces a born-again humility and swears to mend his meretricious ways. Moriarty and Swope fall in love; Kennedy hopes they will remain on the old homestead, reprising his own history. The recovered Ryan reenlists and celebrates his departure by raping Swope and firing a shotgun at the others. Mortally wounded, Kennedy kills Ryan and then makes his peace with Moriarty. Originally intended to be a starring vehicle for actor Robert Blake, the film features strong performances from an excellent cast of relative unknowns. Devane went on to become one of the kings of TV soap operas before landing other solid movie parts. Moriarty developed into a fine character actor. This was one of many films resulting from the Viet Nam war, though not one of the most successful. Barring the sex and violence, GLORY BOY is slow in pace and low in production values. leave a comment
