GIRLS TOWN
starstarstarstar
First-time feature director Jim McKay's rambling, unfocused slice of faux verite seems intended as an alternative to prevailing Hollywood fantasies about female teens, but fails to live up to its aspirations. Patti (Lili Taylor), Angela (Bruklin Harris) and Emma (Anna Grace) are friends forced to examine and confront some harsh realities in the wake of a friend's seemingly inexplicable suicide. Beautiful, intelligent, ambitious Nikki (Aunjanue Ellis) had everything -- including memories of a brutal rape she kept hidden from even her closest friends. After reading of the incident in Nikki's journal, the girls visit reckless revenge on all the men who've done them wrong, including the date who raped Emma and Patti's abusive boyfriend. The film's main drawback lies in the improvisational approach McKay and his ensemble cast took in developing the material. Though he professes his admiration for John Cassavetes, McKay is a long way from emulating him. And with the possible exceptions of Taylor and Harris, his actors lack the experience and expertise that make Mike Leigh's collaborative efforts so successful. Everybody's heart is in the right place, but their collective reach far exceeds their grasp. leave a comment
