1931, Movie, NR, 80 mins

Francis and Tashman star in this screwball comedy as roommates who live in a swank apartment and wear fancy clothes, funded by sappy businessmen vamped by the pair. Problems arise for Francis when she falls in love with handsome and rich hick McCrea. They have a turbulent romance that leads to a marriage proposal, but the frustrated gold digger finally confesses that she's married, though her husband left her long ago. Luckily, after an investigation, it is discovered that she's been divorced all along and just didn't know it. Though the plotting gets convoluted and a bit much at times, Cukor's direction concentrates on snappy dialog and clever comedy sequences. Author Akins had written a very similar plot in the Broadway hit play filmed by United Artists, THE GREEKS HAD A WORD FOR IT. This time, Paramount beat the rival studio into the theaters. leave a comment
