Despite the familiarity of the subject matter, this British soap opera is unexpectedly moving. Dawn (Brenda Blethyn) and her sister-in-law Jackie (Julie Walters), assembly line co-workers, are also life-long friends despite their contrasting personalities. Unlike shy housefrau Dawn, volatile Jackie disdains her husband, sleeps with a club owner, and behaves like Norma Rae at work. Because they've always lived by the motto share and share alike, Jackie finally feels like a winner when Dawn hits the National Lottery. She bolts her marriage, only to learn her lover doesn't want a permanent relationship. Worse, Dawn's good fortune coincides with a recurrence of the cancer she survived years earlier. Without informing her family, dying Dawn allows Jackie to talk her into a whirlwind trip to Las Vegas. During this dream vacation, Dawn has a platonic romance with a handsome cowboy before returning home. A combination of acute writing and breathtaking acting insures that this terminal illness weepie doesn't seem manipulative, and the fact that film firmly establishes Dawn and Jackie as characters before bringing on the trials and tribulations insures that viewers really care what becomes of them. In addition, while female buddy movies often seem rife with fake bonhomie and an easy contempt for men, this film offers a vivid depiction of the everyday trials and tribulations of working-class friends who support each other when the going gets tough. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
