Groucho Marx began working solo--without his brothers--in COPACABANA (1947). In this one, he worked with new teammate William Bendix, who had just signed a lucrative new contract with RKO. Marx and the less-than-cerebral Bendix are troublemaking sailors. Bendix gets a small bequest, which he spends on a racehorse that proves to have multiple maladies. Shipmate Marx attempts to bail out his buddy by returning the horse to stable owner DeFore and redeeming the dollars it cost. Curvaceous carhop Wilson, he discovers, owns the sound and speedy twin of the ailing equine. Marx decides to switch the two nags after entering the crippled colt in a race, ensuring a win, and making a mass of money at the mutuel window. A horsenaping ensues, with the quick and the near-dead both stabled aboard a Navy vessel. At the track, the fleet and the footsore finish neck-and-neck; Marx and Bendix inadvertently capture some saboteurs; DeFore captures well-endowed Wilson; the mettlesome shipmates are bemedalled. leave a comment
