GINGER & FRED tells a warm and very human story about two people who share a little bit of love, interwoven with director Fellini's diatribe against the inanity of the modern television age. Masina and Mastroianni are two aging hoofers who once made a name for themselves as the celebrity-impersonator dance team "Ginger & Fred." Although they bear no more resemblance to Rogers and Astaire than any of a hundred impersonators does to Elvis, the pair's few moments of glory are now relegated to memory. After a long separation, the two are reunited for a glitzy television variety show that also includes such acts as a troupe of midget Iberian dancers; celebrity lookalikes for Ronald Reagan, Telly Savalas, and Clark Gable; a lapsed priest who will marry onstage; and a man who has invented edible, vitamin-enriched panties. Although their performance of "Cheek to Cheek" means very little to the 25 million viewers who plop themselves in front of the television set every night, it means the world to Masina and Mastroianni. The well-guarded image of the team that inspired the movie was clearly important to the real-life Ginger Rogers, however, who sued the filmmakers for $8 million, claiming that the movie damaged her reputation. Her claims were tossed out of court. (In Italian; English subtitles.) leave a comment
