Ames is the society swell, a dame rendered destitute by the Depression who is forced to the demeaning expedient of seeking employment. She finds it in gangster Bellamy's bistro, the Club HeeHaw. Her friendly patron soon upgrades her status from Hee-Haw hostess to "gigolette"--gigolo gender-equivalent--in his swanky new Casino de Monaco. Her love interest, Cook, finds her promotion degrading, and the budding romance is threatened. Additional assaults on amour arrive as booze barons battle about business in this already dated prohibition-formula picture. Able actors are squandered in this anachronism, with Bellamy (the ultimate FDR impersonator) seeming very much out of character. leave a comment
