Watch at risk. Sugar-posioning, with the unctous Dee, as the all-American pertly perky happy-go-brainless model for countless teenagers in the late 1950s--today that seems scary. Dee plays Gidget (a nickname meaning "girl midget"), a whiny youngster who doesn't quite measure up to the chesty, bikinied girls on the beach. Her mom's reassurances come true when the two grooviest surfers in town, Moondoggie (James Darren) and Kahoona (Cliff Robertson), start paying Gidget some attention. Dee had just appeared in Douglas Sirk's IMITATION OF LIFE, and Robertson had turned in a commendable performance in AUTUMN LEAVES. Also hanging ten was Tom Laughlin, who much later made BILLY JACK. Inbred sequels followed, and two horrifying television series. leave a comment
