Look past the macho bluster of the one-armed push up shots that establish Demi Moore as the buffest of the buff: Lt. Jordan O'Neil is the role that Moore has been searching for, the one that fits her to a T. An ambitious Naval intelligence officer, frustrated that she's been passed over for promotion while less competent men rise through the ranks, O'Neil is recruited by a Machiavellian senator (Anne Bancroft) to breach the ranks of the testosterone-fueled Navy SEALs. While there's nothing very compelling about the plot -- we all know O'Neil will persevere and achieve victory in a Hollywood kind of way, the movie has its numerous pleasures. The twisted relationship between O'Neil and sadistic Command Master Chief John Urgayle (Viggo Mortensen, in an eerily convincing performance), whose job it is to eliminate all those unworthy to swim with the SEALs but is particularly intent on breaking O'Neil's spirit, is a psychological cockfight that's both visceral and moving. Ridley Scott's visual styling is in fine form here, but he's also on top of the movie's pacing: Each scene goes on just as long as it needs to and no longer. Bancroft and Mortensen take home the acting awards -- the pleasure they take in what they're doing really makes the film come alive -- but Moore has found the perfect vehicle for the grim determination that has elsewhere made her a laughingstock. leave a comment --Sandra Contreras
