It's 1967 in Naples, Italy. Loren, an angry but highly sensual woman, is annoyed at the deal life has given her. She's poor, she has a bad marriage, and she has absolutely no money. Deciding that there is nothing left for them to live for, Loren and her husband, Gassman, attempt a double suicide but fail, whereupon Loren decides to take up with Adorf, who ran the orphanage in which she was raised and who has desired her since she was a teenager. As it turns out Adorf has long endeavored to prevent Gassman from being able to keep a job. Still trying to get close to Loren, Adorf makes Loren and Gassman the caretakers of a palace, but he doesn't tell them that he lurks in the room above theirs. Loren doesn't realize the palace is supposedly haunted and that Adorf is allowing her and Gassman to live there so he can dispel the rumors of the ghosts. Gassman sees Adorf late one night and thinks he is a ghost. He also finds a packet of money that Adorf has dropped and believes the ghost is trying to help the couple. When Gassman rents a room to a dizzy hooker, Lee, Loren is outraged. Mistakenly believing that Gassman is pimping for Lee. Loren leaves without telling anyone where she has gone. Gassman is arrested by police for his wife's "murder" and tossed in jail. Adorf lights a perpetual candle in Loren's memory in the basement underneath the mansion. After a while, Gassman is released because there is no evidence to prove he's killed his wife. Seven months have passed when Gassman finds Loren back at home, hiding. Gassman and Loren are back in love and determined to make a new life. This time, when Adorf sees Loren, he thinks she is a ghost. Falling to his knees, and he promises to make amends for all his misdeeds. After directing Adorf to donate some his dirty money to a worthy charity, Loren suggests that he marry Lee. Adorf also gives Gassman a ton of money and the couple leave before he realizes he's been duped. Traveling to Scotland, Loren and Gassman take jobs as domestics for a crazed nobleman in a castle that really is haunted. Even with Mastroianni in a cameo and the always delightful Gassman as the male lead, this film didn't do well at the box office or with the critics. Based on a play by De Fillipo, it just doesn't translate well to the screen. Although the running time is just over 90 minutes, viewers will find themselves wondering if this film will ever end. leave a comment
