One of the most eagerly anticipated sequels of 1989, GHOSTBUSTERS II was a terrible disappointment, a shockingly self-satisfied and unforgivably slapdash sequel to the phenomenally popular 1984 comedy GHOSTBUSTERS. The main story elements are the adorable baby belonging to Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver), whose buggy becomes contaminated with slime oozing from under the sidewalk; the ghost of evil Carpathian despot, Vigo (Wilhelm von Homburg), who demands the sacrifice of a male infant, making way for the kidnaping of Dana's baby; rivers of pink slime fueled by the hostility of Manhattan's populace; the stalwart ghostbusters (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson); and renewed romance between Dana and ghostbuster Dr. Peter Venkman (Murray). GHOSTBUSTERS II is such a lazy effort that the formula machinery is laid bare for all to see. It suffers from writing that is obvious, sloppy, and unimaginative. Old ideas are slightly disguised and then regurgitated, with characters arbitrarily altered to fit the new context. The most irritating aspect of this sorry sequel is the overwhelming aura of self-congratulation that permeates it. leave a comment
