GHOST TOWN combines elements of the horror and western genres, resulting in a mixed bag of pretty pictures and stale storytelling. Present-day deputy sheriff Luz stumbles upon a ghost town while searching for missing socialite Hickland, who at the film's opening was snatched up by a man in black appearing out of a dust cloud on horseback. Langley, quite to his amazement, discovers that the town is full of the undead, the townsfolk bound to an old curse that keeps them ageless. GHOST TOWN has a lot going for it. Director Governor brings a sense of poignancy to the material (a quality that is, to say the least, absent from most recent horror films); the movie is beautifully photographed by Mac Ahlberg; and the performances are convincing. What starts out as an interesting premise, however, soon turns into a run-of-the-mill, Saturday-afternoon bad-guy western--the only difference being that here the villains are zombies. It should have been fun, but instead of exploring the concept's potential, the film falls prey to western cliches and lacks the strong narrative drive that could have kept it one hoof ahead of the rest. leave a comment
