Ghost Story

1981, Movie, R, 110 mins

Four elderly men--Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and John Houseman--meet regularly in New England to tell each other ghost stories. One year, strange occurrences upset the usual routine. It's then revealed that, 50 years earlier, these men accidentally killed a lovely young tease. To cover their tracks, they put her in a car and drove it into a lake, only to see her frantically but unsuccessfully try to escape. Alice Krige (CHARIOTS OF FIRE; BARFLY) turns in an eerie performance as the vengeful ghost. The film suffers from a haphazard script by CARRIE screenwriter Larry Cohen, who removed all of the nuance and subtlety from Peter Straub's best-selling novel in favor of special effects. Director John Irvin does manage to evoke some mood and atmosphere from the snowy New England setting, and the performances from the four veteran lead players are enjoyable. leave a comment
