Set on an abandoned oil rig platform, this Scottish chiller adopts the documentary mannerisms of 1999's THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. "Action Planet," a Green Peace splinter group, occupies an abandoned oil rig, Janus, before it can be reclaimed by big-business concerns and videotapes the raid to promote their cause. Publicity-conscious Vincent (Jaason Simmons) heads the ten-person brigade that intends to evacuate the Janus’s skeleton crew after storming the structure. Curiously, there is no crew, lending credence to rumors about a mysterious plague aboard the rig that Vincent heard and ignored rather scuttle the mission. Paraplegic Crawford (Noel Fitzpatrick) may be the only person who knows the truth about the disappearances on the Janus, having survived a work-related accident, and it was Crawford who enlisted the help of Action Planet in order to reboard the oil rig. Even though the place is apparently deserted, someone — or something — starts eliminating Action Planet activists. As the fatalities mount, team-member Tom (Jamie Bamber) defies Vincent, who's willing to sacrifice lives in the name of ecology. After investigating the Janus's logs, the environmentalists can't decide whether their stalker is human, supernatural, bacterial or extra-terrestrial. The bizarre killing agent moves imperceptibly from body to body; the only sign of a person’s possession is the instant healing of the infected hosts's wounds. The justifiably paranoid survivors don't know who to trust, and the answer to their lies in a videotape left by a terrified Janus crewman, whose strange instructions will be difficult to implement. Director Julian Kean peeks oh-so-slowly around every corner of this floating graveyard, and though he and cinematographer Jan Pester manage to create atmospheric tension, the screenplay lets them down. Its four screenwriters — including Kean — toy with so many theories that viewer interest in what's afoot has dissipated long before the movie ends. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
