Ghettoblaster

1989, Movie, R, 86 mins

Inspired by COLORS and descended from 1970s revenge fantasies like DEATH WISH and VIGILANTE FORCE, GHETTOBLASTER is a totally unnecessary action flick about one man's battle to redeem his neighborhood. Accompanied by his daughter (Courtney Gebhart), Travis (Richard Hatch) visits his parents in the neighborhood where he grew up and discovers it has become a war zone. He decides to help out in the family grocery store, but his father is shot and killed by the Hammer gang. Naturally, Vietnam vet Travis becomes a one-man vigilante force. Watchable on a mindless level, this passable avenger film never rises above limited aspirations. Exploiting all-too-real inner-city calamities, GHETTOBLASTER eschews plot logic and concentrates on cheap thrills while cashing in on "vigilante chic." No one in the cast even tries to act; they just coast through the familiar plot developments in a daze. GHETTOBLASTER offers enough explosions and shoot-em-ups to keep viewers awake and enough cliched writing and flaccid direction to make them wonder why they bothered watching it. leave a comment
