Getting Over

1981, Movie, PG, 108 mins

starstarstarstar
Essentially a vehicle for a rock group called the Love Machine, this film was presented in tandem with performances by that group for the short time it was in release. It's a silly, exaggerated ride through show business, with every stereotype in recent memory featured in the screenplay. Stone (John F. Goff), a standard unscrupulous record producer, hires promoter Mike Barnett (John R. Daniels) to help him comply with affirmative action employment standards. The lowly promoter finds and develops the Love Machine, an all-female group, then attempts to lure Deff Jeff Marvelous (Andrew "Buzz" Cooper) away from a record company run by some mob types with a multimillion-dollar contract offer that, of course, he can't possibly fulfill. There are more plot contrivances in GETTING OVER's 108 minutes than you would find in a lifetime of reading Dickens. The best part of the film, which was written and produced by star Daniels, is the music; everything else is the worst part. leave a comment
