1937, Movie, NR, 90 mins

A remake of a 1923 silent feature, THE GO-GETTER is the story of Brent, a man who loses his leg in a navy dirigible crash.(In the original, the hero lost his leg in the war.) He gets a job with a lumber company and promptly falls in love with the boss's daughter (Louise). But general manager Eldridge also has designs on her and sends Brent off on "the blue vase test." This is a company test in which an employee must find a vaguely described blue vase and bring it back to headquarters via railway. Of course Brent succeeds, winning his true love's heart and becoming the new G.M. as well. The film starts off with an interesting premise but quickly becomes just another unbelievably simplistic romance. It was director Berkeley's first non-musical effort and he clearly was not cut out for such fare. Hokey plots that work for musicals just don't make it as straight drama. leave a comment
