1995, Movie, R, 117 mins

Harrowing and heartfelt, with knockout performances by a pair of fine actresses. It's about two siblings, both singers. Sadie (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is hugely ambitious, wildly self-destructive and all but unknown outside of small-time punk clubs. Georgia (Mare Winningham) is stable and successful, an accomplished folk artist with a husband and two beautiful children. Is Sadie a legend in her own mind, too deluded to see that her talents don't measure up to her aspirations? Is Georgia a hypocritical hausfrau blessed with talent she's too smug to share? This rare study of the relationship between two sisters (scripted by Leigh's mother, Barbara Turner) doesn't offer any easy answers. It's keenly observed, judiciously balanced and deftly helmed by Ulu Grosbard (TRUE CONFESSIONS, STRAIGHT TIME). See it with someone you're ambivalent about. leave a comment
