Manhattanites take to the wild country. Dating now, but amusing thanks to the chemistry between Benny and the vastly underrated Ann Sheridan, the loveliest and most sardonic straight woman ever. The Kaufman-Hart Broadway comedy has reversed the husband-wife roles, with Sheridan as the packrat who drives her conservative husband nuts--a workable premise considering Benny's penny-pinching image. Though dense with slapstick, the comedy is punctuated with belly laughs as Benny undergoes one outrage after another. One of the many priceless scenes shows Benny, Sheridan, Coburn and Kilbride trying to cheer themselves by guzzling hard cider before being thrown out of their white-elephant colonial home. Kilbride, who scores heavily with offbeat humor, renders a side-splitting reaction when he breaks his stoic silence to sing loudly and unexpectedly, "I'll Never Smile Again." If you're a Benny fan, you'll be satisfied. leave a comment
