GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE
starstarstarstar
Live-action version of the satirical cartoon series by Rocky and Bullwinkle creator Jay Ward, in which a clueless but good-hearted Tarzan type bumbles around the jungle and is helped out of scrapes by his animal friends. Dippy San Francisco socialite Ursula Stanhope (Leslie Mann) goes on an African safari to escape her obnoxious fiancé (Thomas Hayden Church). He, naturally, follows her, guided by a pair of ruthless poachers (Greg Cruttwell, Abraham Benrubi) who hope to capture the legendary great white ape of Ape Mountain. The "white ape," of course, turns out to be bumbling George of the Jungle (Brendan Fraser). Ursula falls in love with the unsophisticated but manly vine-swinger, while one disenchanted thug complains to the other, "You dragged me all the way out here to see a guy in a leopard print bikini? I could have stayed in Miami Beach." That's about as funny as things get in the amiable but toothless comedy, in the service of which a mountain of special-effects talents labored to bring forth an elephant that capers around like a frisky pup. Fraser fills out that leopard bikini very nicely and there's some pretty cute animal silliness that should amuse small children, but the very minimal story feels attenuated and logy. John Cleese supplies the voice of George's brainy and terrifically tolerant sidekick, a very unconvincing animatronic gorilla named Ape, but even he can't raise the level of humor above the harmlessly goofy. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
