There's a fine line between subversively transgressive and just plain gross, and this coming-of-age-movies parody from Todd Stephens, who wrote and directed the charming and underrated GYPSY 83, crashes right over it. Featuring lots of shock but little value, the film quickly begins to feel like a pointless revel in outrageous tastelessness for its own sake. In a world in which everyone and his grandfather is gay, four recent grads of San Torum High (take a bow, Village Voice sex columnist Dan Savage) are determined to lose their virginity by summer's end. First, however, they must conquer their individual hang-ups: Jarod the jock (Jonathan Chase) claims to be the most sexually experienced of the group but is actually deeply insecure about the size of his penis; geeky valedictorian Griff (Mitch Morris), who's secretly in love with Jarod, is insecure about the size of his butt; Nico (Jonah Blechman), who loves new queer cinema, old golden-age Hollywood and lip gloss, needs to cut his blind girlfriend loose and admit that he isn't really bisexual; and Andy (Michael Carbonaro), who lusts after his emigre teacher Mr. Puckov (Graham Norton), must face up to the fact that there's nothing wrong with being a voraciously submissive bottom. With its relatively obscure references to recent gay coming-of-age movies, and with plot points pulled from such mainstream teen comedies as AMERICAN PIE, Stephens' film isn't so much a spoof as a spoof of a spoof — he's trying to put a satirical gay spin on such genre lampoons as SCARY MOVIE and JUST ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE, which is just about one spoof too many. And frankly, replacing AMERICAN PIE's sexually assaulted apple pie with a spinach quiche — but otherwise playing the gag beat for beat — isn’t all that clever, nor is it particularly funny. Stephens' determination to make "the gayest movie ever" leads him to enlist the help of numerous gay actors, from Kid-in-the-Hall Scott Thompson and comedian Ant to porn actor Matthew Rush and iconic drag performer Lypsinka (whose Joan Crawford-as-Mommie Dearest act reeks of mothballs), and to draw on the kind of nasty stuff usually confined to the raunchiest of fetish videos: There's a colon-ized gerbil, an enema that just keeps giving, a CARRIE parody that involves a bucket of semen dumped on someone's head, flagrantly racist stereotypes and worst of all, naked federal inmate/Survivor winner Richard Hatch, up close, very personal and without that merciful digital blur.
