This was Reynolds' first directorial effort, and he continues the adventures of his character from the movie WHITE LIGHTNING (1973). Reynolds is forced by federal agents to help nab a corrupt political boss and school friend, Reed. The agents get his cooperation by threatening to throw his father into jail for moonshining. Reynolds is followed by incompetent federal agent Weston and TV reporter Hutton, who becomes Burt's love interest. An entertaining piece of "good ol' boy" fluff with plenty of car and boat chases. Reynolds continued to star in this type of film (SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT [1980], HOOPER [1978], CANNONBALL RUN [1981]), until he became a parody of the character he portrayed. The film is notable for good performances from inexperienced cinema actors, notably country-and-western composer-singer Reed (in his second feature film) and TV interviewer Douglas (in his feature-picture debut). leave a comment
