1984, Movie, PG-13, 103 mins

A sweet, enagaging movie with rich characters and a fanciful premise. Bancroft, who has adored Garbo since childhood, is divorced from Hill, who couldn't tolerate her eccentricities. Their son, Silver, is married to the ultimate Jewish Princess, Fisher. When Bancroft learns that she is dying, she tells Silver that her one desire is to meet her idol. Because Garbo has lived as a recluse in New York for many years, Silver attempts to fulfill his mother's wish. He begins to stalk Garbo (played in some scenes by Zoe, in others by Comden), a chore that takes him all over New York. This is Bancroft's picture, although she is actually on screen far less than one might think. Her character is constantly referred to and thought about, so viewers feel that she has been on-screen for the entire film. Some very funny lines from first-time writer Grusin lighten the sadness at watching Bancroft fade. The blend worked well enough in Brooks's TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, which in some ways was not so good as this movie. leave a comment
