Matthews, a London newspaper reporter aboard a New York-bound ocean liner, angles for an interview with alleged Hollywood actress, Blakeney, who is actually a jewel thief. Scotland Yard inspector Mackay is also on board, searching for the thief, and he suspects Matthews. So does gangster Pendleton, another passenger on the ship, who kidnaps Matthews to work for his boss when they dock in New York. Mackay finally realizes who the criminal is and rescues Matthews. The film is a musical but most of it is devoted to tracking down the thief amidst a hail of gunfire. This was the third of Gaumont British's vehicles for Matthews, "The Dancing Divinity," the English equivalent of America's popular Eleanor Powell. Like the other films, this was directed by her husband, Hale, a popular British song-and-dance man. Critics of the time contended that this picture wasted Matthews' terpsichorean talents in favor of the hackneyed gangster theme. leave a comment
