The only feature film versatile Matthau ever directed. He also held starring status as an independent gangster struggling to make a mark for himself in the territory of local boss McFarlan. Understandably angered by this new crime figure, McFarlan initially makes several useless attempts
to trap Matthau. The two forces eventually combine to create what would be the beginning of their demise. An unusual role for Matthau in that his abilities seem not to be limited to his customary growling type of comedy. Overall, a good effort.
