1971, Movie, PG, 98 mins

What a waste of money, time, and talent. Based on newspaper columnist Jimmy Breslin's hilarious novel, producers Chartoff and Winkler and screenwriter Salt let this thing get so far out of hand that Goldstone's pedestrian direction couldn't save it. The story concerns a bunch of incompetent hoodlums who try to kill a Mafia chief but fail time after time. It's one flat sight gag after another as Orbach leads his clods against Stander. The only reason to watch this at all is to see young Robert De Niro as a crooked immigrant. Villechaize got his big American break in the movie and proves to be just as bad in this as he went on to be on TV. Good music from Dave Grusin and fine lensing from Roizman couldn't save this from sinking to the bottom of the East River. leave a comment
