This sexy, sultry, and erotic film is based on a 1925 novel by Amado, which was also adapted for a long-running Brazilian soap opera that likewise starred Braga. A bloated, ancient-looking Mastroianni is the bar owner who hires Braga as his cook. It's 1925 in the Bahian village of Parati, where a great drought has come upon the land, and the filthy, downtrodden Gabriela and some of her thirsty compadres have emigrated to town from the country. The moment she meets Mastroiannii, it's evident that she the proprietor will beable to use her. Once the mud is cleaned off her face, Gabriela begins to appear attractive to many of the other men in the village as well, and Mastroianni decides to put a stop to that by marrying her and insisting that she doff her old sexy clothing and don more conservative ones. He also reveres the time-honored notion that it would be wrong for them to sleep together until after the wedding. Naturally the pneumatic Gabriela pays little attention to this Henry Higgins' attempts to transform her into a lady. A soft-core porn film that tries to hide its carnality under the cover of Amado's book, GABRIELA concerns itself chiefly with the story's sexual angle. The novel, however, was a comic look at life in the town of Ilheus, rich with interesting characters, satire, and politics. Worth seeing mainly for Braga, who displays--besides an ample amount of flesh--delightful freshness and energy. The videocassette is available in both dubbed and subtitled (Portuguese into English) versions. leave a comment
