Huston is a rancher about to marry socialite Anderson. His daughter Stanwyck tries to talk him out of it, but to no avail. Stanwyck attacks her stepmother, and when Huston hangs an old ranchhand, she vows revenge on her father. She and her lover, Corey, force Huston into bankruptcy, and he
is shot for hanging the ranchhand. A moody, dark western (Victor Milner's cinematography was nominated for an Oscar) with overtones of Greek tragedy, this has a particularly vicious performance by Stanwyck and was the last film for Huston, who died of a heart attack two months before the film was
released.
