By then the most bankable female star of the decade, La Strident reprised the role that shot her to superstardom in FUNNY GIRL. Sequels are seldom as good as the originals, and this is no exception. Still, it's an entertaining and watchable film whose comedy flies higher than its drama. The picture begins in 1930; she's gotten over Nick Arnstein (Sharif) and now meets entrepreneur-showman-songwriter Billy Rose (Caan). Brice and Rose marry, but his infidelities and the strain of their separate careers destroy the marriage. Brice's life story was heavily fictionalized for this film, but the result is still dramatically weak. Streisand and Caan have their magnetic moments, but the lumpiness of the lengthy screenplay works against them much of the way. However, there's enough music in the movie to satisfy anyone, with songs culled from several sources to fill out the Kander and Ebb score. Streisand's galvanic rendition of "How Lucky Can You Get?" is a standout. Ross moved up from choreographer to direct, and he does a good job despite the thin script and Caan's minor musical talents. leave a comment
