Once again recasting genre movie conventions in light of private theological obsessions, Abel Ferrara here takes on the period gangster flick, and it's one of his most personal films. Set in New York City during the 1930s, it centers on the Tempio brothers (Christopher Walken, Chris Penn and Vincent Gallo), small-time racketeers, and their beleaguered wives (Annabella Sciorra and Isabella Rossellini). When one of the brothers is slain outside a movie theater, the others swear vengeance. The list of people with good reasons to want Johnny Tempio dead is a long one, however, and includes rival gangster Gaspare (Benicio Del Toro). Read the complete review for The Funeral
