A weeper using the frozen tundra of the Arctic landscapes as a background has Ulric the half-Eskimo woman who leaves the tribe with whom she has dwelled to seek out the fun and excitement offered by a visiting sea captain. As always the new encounters of the Eskimo girl are hardly what she expected; she is forced to support the shiftless captain through her singing abilities, which aren't all that much. Her attempts to return to her husband and the other Eskimos fail when she and the captain fall into an icy chasm. Story is a pretty good one, though it is treated a bit too melodramatically and some of the depictions of Eskimo culture are totally ridiculous. This was the first talking role for Ulric, in a film career that was less than exceptional. Veteran character actor Landers Stevens, here playing a tough salt, was the father of pantheon film director George Stevens. leave a comment
