A genuinely creepy serial-killer picture that doesn't excel at disguising the psycho's identity, but does sustain a pervasive air of apprehension. When gallery owner Lacy's (Catherine Oxenberg) art scout returns from a backwoods vacation with a haunting portrait, Lacy wants to represent the primitive artist. Accompanied by her associate, Polly (Ellina McCormick), Lacy visits the one-horse Montana town where the painting originated and questions bed-and-breakfast owner Moira (Joan Benedict) about the painter. Moira introduces Lacy to her nephew, Sean (Eric Roberts), the mute artist responsible for the icon-like portraits. But Moira's brother, Ben (Rod Steiger), distrusts outsiders, and his son, Ethan (Scott Plank) — who happens to be the town sheriff — tries to frighten Lacy away with warnings that women have a habit of disappearing in this sparsely populated area. Sean may not speak, but he sure can draw; he's also sexy, a gourmand, and a devotee of Richard Wagner. Lacy sends Polly back to the big city and she stays behind to cultivate her discovery. Meanwhile, a hippie and a hiker vanish, and hard-drinking Ethan may know more about the crimes than he lets on. Lacy temporarily moves into Sean's cabin after spraining her ankle; smitten with Sean, she doesn't understand that his speechlessness is the result of childhood trauma: Uncle Ben's affair with Sean's mom led to the murder-suicide of Sean's parents and Sean hasn't spoken since. When Polly returns to pry Lacy away, a madman kidnaps her and tries to turn both women into ice sculptures! Can Polly and Lacy escape from this psychopath, who freezes his victims before installing them in his private art collection? A worthy addition to the canon of sado-sexual horror flicks, this unsettling movie immerses viewers in the murderer's lethal emotional numbness and captures the psychological climate that warped him and immobilized his relatives. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
