Just after rumors had been spread that Ingmar Bergman was to retire from the realm of feature film production to devote himself to his first love, the theater, he made this movie. Something of a follow-up to SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE, FROM THE LIFE OF THE MARIONETTES concentrates on the emotional and sexual repression that characterizes the relationship between Peter Egerman (Robert Atzorn) and his wife (Christine Buchegger), the psychological antithesis of which is expressed in his bizarre murder of a young prostitute.
