FRIGHTENERS, THE
starstarstarstar
A horror comedy about mass murder, survivor guilt, persistent sociopathy and the afterlife, cult director Peter Jackson's latest is a high-wire spook show without a net -- half the fun is watching it teeter between the tastelessly amusing and the unforgivably gross. Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox) lost his wife in a traumatic car accident five years ago; since then, he's been able to see and talk to the dead. He's become a psychic con artist, using his ghostly connections to run a bogus exorcism scam. When he finds himself suspected of a rash of murders, all hell busts loose. In his Hollywood debut, Jackson goes relatively easy on the wildly self-conscious grotesquerie that established his reputation, and he shows an absolute genius for supporting casting -- e.g., John Astin of TV's The Addams Family as a lewd ghost or RE-ANIMATOR Jeffrey Combs as a whacked-out FBI agent. As for Fox, his trademark boyishness is finally slipping away, leaving behind a faintly defeated air that suits the former child star surprisingly well.o leave a comment
